Characteristics

Impossible relationship

Two ordinary things combine in a way that cannot occur in everyday space.

Scale reversal

A familiar object becomes unexpectedly large or small.

Coherent lighting

Consistent shadows make an impossible scene feel internally believable.

Quiet typography

Simple live text gives the viewer a stable reference beside the strange image.

Use it

Figma
Impossible portal
  1. Build a simple horizon and a freestanding architectural frame.
  2. Draw a second landscape inside the opening, with a conflicting horizon.
  3. Add a staircase that ends in open air and align its shadows with the frame.
  4. Set a plain editorial title outside the illustrated scene.
Starting points
  1. Choose one familiar setting and change one physical rule.
  2. Make the lighting and perspective otherwise consistent.
  3. Keep the title and practical details on a quiet, readable surface.
Research notes & sources

A current gap in image-led composition. The Met places the historical movement in an international network centred on dreams and the unconscious. Adobe’s 2026 forecast highlights playful absurdity, while Canva describes uncanny, dreamlike imagery. These are contemporary commercial interpretations, not synonyms for the full historical movement. Our original vector scenes use impossible architecture and scale; the selection is an editorial response to those forecasts, not a claim that surrealism began with AI.
