Characteristics
Torn and cut paper
The torn or roughly cut edge is the signature. A clean digital crop looks fake; a ragged, fibrous edge reads as real paper and real hands.
Layering and overlap
Elements stack and overlap so the piece feels assembled, not arranged. Depth comes from layered scraps, not from shadows or grids.
Visible fasteners and process marks
Tape, staples, stitching, glue edges, and brush strokes are left showing. The seams are the point: they prove a human put it together.
Mixed media
Photography, illustration, scanned paper, hand-drawn marks, and type are woven together rather than kept to a single clean medium.
Halftone and photocopy texture
Grain, halftone dots, ink bleed, and misregistration unify the layers. Texture acts as the glue that makes disparate scraps feel like one piece.
Intentional imperfection
Wavering strokes, off-register color, film grain, and rough edges are kept on purpose, as the antidote to sterile, machine-perfect output.
Use it
Figma
Scanned texture as the base
- Import scanned kraft, newsprint, or photocopy textures as PNGs.
- Use them as image fills on the background and on individual scraps.
- Set an overall grain or halftone layer to Multiply at low opacity.
- Keep the texture visible under color so nothing reads as a clean digital fill.
Texture is the glue: one grain layer over the whole canvas makes mismatched scraps feel like one piece.
Torn edges with masks
- Draw or import torn-paper-edge shapes (or scan a real torn edge).
- Use the torn shape as a mask over each photo or scrap.
- Add a subtle drop shadow so the scrap lifts off the layer beneath.
- Vary the tear on each element so no two edges match.
A straight rectangular crop is the giveaway that it is not really paper; mask everything.
Fake risograph overprint
- Duplicate an image and tint each copy a single spot color.
- Offset one copy by a few pixels to mimic misregistration.
- Set the top layer to Multiply or Darken so the inks blend where they overlap.
- Add a halftone or noise overlay for the screened, printed texture.
Keep the palette to two or three inks; real riso is limited, and the limit is what sells it.
Off-grid type collage
- Set words in mixed faces: handwriting, typewriter, and a bold display.
- Rotate letters or words a few degrees and vary their baselines.
- Place each on a small torn paper scrap with its own background.
- Overlap and layer the scraps rather than aligning them on a line.
Keep one face readable for any real body text; let the cut-out face do the shouting.
Starting points
- Gather real material: scanned paper, photocopies, photos, hand-drawn marks.
- Choose a paper-neutral ground and one or two bold spot colors.
- Assemble by layering and overlapping scraps, rotating them off-grid.
