Maximalism

More is more: loud color, dense pattern, oversized type, joy on purpose.

Festival identity

Oversized type, colliding color, and sticker-like details assembled around one loud event message.

Product landing page

Mixed type, overlapping product imagery, and irregular frames create density around a still-readable shop action.

Packaging system

A repeated pack structure lets color, rotation, and oversized naming vary without losing the family resemblance.

Characteristics

Saturated, clashing color

Vibrant, contrasting color is the backbone. Clashing is not an accident to avoid but the effect itself, as long as it is done with intention rather than dumped on the page.

Layered density

Elements stack into a multi-faceted surface: multiple patterns and textures layered to create depth and keep the eye moving. Empty space is the exception, not the rule.

Oversized, mixed type

Type is bold, oversized, and stylized, often several contrasting typefaces in one composition. The headline is frequently the loudest object on the page.

Pattern and ornament

Memphis-derived squiggles, zigzags, and repeating motifs, plus decorative flourishes scaled up into supergraphics that fill the frame.

Eclectic collage

Imagery blends styles, eras, and cultures, mixing references the way a mixtape or a zine does, with no obligation to a single coherent source.

Joy as the brief

The emotional intent is explicit. Bright color and bold shape are used to trigger the brain's reward system, which is where the dopamine name comes from.

Use it

Figma
Clashing palettes as Variables
  1. Define each color scheme as a set of Figma Variables, the way Figma's own team built six palettes for Config.
  2. Apply variables instead of raw hex so you can swap a whole scheme at once.
  3. Keep a neutral set in the same system for rest areas.

Variables turn maximalist color from a liability into something you can retune in seconds.

The vibrating pair
  1. Pick two colors at the same tonal and hue level, for example a magenta and a red.
  2. Place them directly adjacent with no border between.
  3. Nudge one until the boundary shimmers; that buzz is the effect.

This is the documented Figma and Spotify technique; it only works when the two are equally bright.

Supergraphics from primitives
  1. Start with a rectangle, circle, and polygon from the toolbar.
  2. Duplicate, rotate, and scale them far past their normal size.
  3. Layer and overlap them into a supergraphic that fills the frame.

Config 2024's whole identity came from toolbar primitives; constraint is what keeps the chaos coherent.

Mix type with intent
  1. Set an oversized display face as the focal object.
  2. Pair it with one expressive face and one neutral grotesk for body.
  3. Use blend modes or overlap to weave type into the pattern layer.

Three faces is plenty; the contrast between them does the work, not the count.

Starting points
  1. Pick a saturated palette of four or more colors that genuinely clash.
  2. Choose your one anchor: a focal headline, shape, or image the page builds around.
  3. Layer pattern and supergraphics from simple shapes, scaled up.
